Now that the lake has frozen there are a few extra annoyances, and some things are easier too. I’ve been collecting water from the lake, but now I am chipping ice with an axe and melting it on the propane stove. My dog can no longer go on island off-leash because she might cross the ice to shore and bark at poor unsuspecting skiiers. But on the upside, we too will be skiing to Burwash very soon and I no longer have to paddle to shore in high winds just to take her for a walk. And probably in a few days it’ll be thick enough to drive home!

What happened was far beyond any of our wildest dreams – a community of less than twenty thousand people had over half a million votes and won $500 000 to construct a much-needed animal shelter for the NWT.
